Automotive Grade Urea

Overview

Automotive grade urea is a high-purity solid urea used as the raw material for producing AUS 32 — the 32.5% urea solution known commercially as DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) in North America and AdBlue in Europe and many other markets. The solution is injected into the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles equipped with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) systems to reduce NOx emissions.

Because trace impurities in the solution can poison the SCR catalyst, automotive grade urea must be controlled more strictly than fertilizer grade material — particularly biuret content, insoluble matter and particle consistency. Buyers typically combine the granules with demineralized water under controlled conditions to produce the final solution.
